Book Review – THE ONE THING

How I came across this Book:-
I ordered
“The One Thing” by 'Gary Keller' and 'Jeff Papasan' on 13th January 2022 from Amazon. My motivation to
get this book is its title and many booktubers are suggesting this book for
self-growth and productivity. Another reason behind this purchase was, like
everybody else, I was also confused about whether I should master one skill or
try to learn multiple skills. So this book helped me a lot in understanding
this situation and in taking the best decision for me as per the situation. So
if you are facing confusion regarding your choices, I think you should give
this book a try and have a better chance of making a good decision for
yourself.
About this Book:-
Back Cover of the copy of "The One Thing" I own
“If you
chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one” This book starts with this
Russian proverb and from this very first page, you get the idea of what should
be delivered to you in this book. There is also a question it raises for you to
ask yourself which is-
“What’s the one thing which I can do now
so that every other thing I do other than that thing becomes easier or
unnecessary?”
This question
is a perfect example of what this book will try to bring out of you. This book
says that anyone who has achieved great things in their life has known their
one thing, so you should also know your one thing if you want to achieve great
feats.
This book
describes one thing as the work which, on doing moves you closer to your
ultimate goal very fast. This book is divided into 3 parts, which are-
Part 1- “The Lies”
Part 2- “The Truth”
Part 3- “Extraordinary Results”

This is the image of the Index of the copy of "The One Thing" I own. In it, you can clearly see the size of the fonts are smaller than the normal font size

Part 1- “The Lies”(They Mislead and
Derail us):-
In this part of the book, the author tells us about
the lies which are the reason behind the failure and inability to succeed of an
individual. These lies are-
1- Everything Matters Equally 4- Will Power is Always on Will Call
2- Multitasking 5- A Balanced Life
3- A Disciplined Life
6- Big
is Bad
These are six major lies that worked as
hindrances to your journey to success and if you believed in them then surely
you start underestimating yourself and will be unable to give your best in
whatever task you will do.
·
Part 2-“The Truth”(The Simple Path to
Productivity):-
In this part, the writer tells us what one should do
and follow to achieve big things in their life. These truths are-
1- The Focusing Question
2- The Success Habit
3- The Path to Great Answers
· Part 3-“Extraordinary Results”(Unlocking The Possibilities Within You):-
To get extraordinary results in whatever work you do, the author suggests 5 principles for you to focus on so that achieving extraordinary results becomes easier for you. These five principles are-
1- Live with Purpose
2- Live with Priority
3- Live with Productivity
4- The Three Commitments (a)Follow the Path of Mastery
(b)Move from ‘Entrepreneurial to a Purposeful
way of Life
(c)Live with Accountability Cycle
5- The Four Thieves (a) Inability to say ‘no’
(b) Fear of Chaos
(c) Poor Health Habits
(d) Environment doesn’t support your goals

Best Things About This Book:-
1.
This book is good and it has some
great examples as well to prove its fact.
2.
This book is beginner-friendly and
small in size with only 217 pages of content.
3.
This book will try to make you the master
of one trade that is most important in your life and make you find that one
thing as soon as possible.
4.
This will surely help you to find
your one thing and show you the way how you can make the best out of it.
5.
Another great thing about this book
is that this book starts straight with the chapters skipping the
acknowledgement, publishers note, about the author etc. because the authors
want you to get to the one thing directly without any distractions. So the book
is itself a good example of the whole one-thing principle.
6.
The book also has good graphics and
diagrams which makes it more appealing and easy to read.
·
Drawbacks of this Book:-
1.
The very first drawback of this book
is its fonts are too small(at least in the Indian Subcontinent Version). The
words are so small that it will not be easy for everyone to read them,
especially those who have vision problems.
2.
The book becomes repetitive after
some time and continuously repeats the ‘one thing’ word and it may become
frustrating for some readers.
3.
This book lacks in giving a good
amount of historical examples.
4.
This book might be the one you are
searching for or might be the one you want to skip because this is not for
everyone.
·
Conclusion:-
This book is fair in my view and you should read it at least once, I think it has some great principles which can shape or change your life positively. For me, this book will get 65 out of 100. And I think you should try it if you are trying to find your one thing.
