Book Review of PERCY JACKSON & THE LIGHTNING THIEF

Ø How I Came Across This Book:- After reading the Harry Potter series I started to get many fantasy book recommendations on Amazon and YouTube about fantasy fiction books and series. Out of all the recommendations my attention was primarily grabbed by the Percy Jackson Series written by an American author Rick Riordan. I wanted to read the Percy Jackson Series because of its connection with Greek Gods and  Greek Mythology. So my priority in the TBR list of the Fantasy Fiction genre was the Percy Jackson Series.

     On 01 September 2022, I purchased the Percy Jackson Ultimate Collection box set for INR 909. This box set includes a pack of 5 books from The Percy Jackson Series enclosed in a paper box set. When I finally ordered this ultimate collection I was super hyped about having it in my hand so that I could unbox it and feel it in my hand. But for some reason, I didn’t pick up this book for almost a year.

     In July of 2023, I started reading the first book in the series which is Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. I finished this book on 10 September 2023.

Ø About This Book:- ‘Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief’ is about a boy named Percy Jackson, the son of a Greek God. Percy experiences a lot of weird things from his childhood and school which makes him an abnormal kid in the eyes of his school teachers and relatives. But at Yancy Academy, he faces a monster who happens to be his own Algebra teacher and this incident changes his life forever because he gets to know about his reality.

     In this book, our Protagonist is accused of stealing the Lightning bolt of Zeus(God of the sky),  and this book is all about the journey of how Percy clears himself of all the accusations and finds the real thief. This book is also a world-building book for the series. This book is 375 pages long(Indian Subcontinent Edition) with 22 Chapters.

     This book has a lot of good characters in my opinion. Characters like Grover, Luke, Annabeth, Chiron, Clarisse, Sally Jackson, Mr. D, Greek Gods etc Every single character of this book is well written and you will never find them out of context. They all have their role to play and everyone played it well in this book. The pace of this book is very good, the book is neither too slow nor too fast.

Ø Good Things About This Book:-

·        The characters in the book are awesome and make reading the book worth your time.

·        The font size and style used in this book are perfect and make it easy to read.

·        The pace of this book is good.

·        The background of this book is great which makes you want to read it as soon as possible if love mythological fiction.

·        The size of this book is also neither large nor small which makes it a good pick for the majority of the readers.

 

Ø Drawbacks of This Book:-

·        I don’t like the writing style of the author, as it fails to keep me stuck to the book for a longer time.

·        Lack of surprise element in the story for me, but I think if a beginner or a child reads this book they will get surprised at times.

·        In this book, our protagonist feels larger than life because the age of Percy in this book is 12 and he does things that don’t fit with reality even if he is a demigod.

Ø Conclusion:-  This book is the first book of the Percy Jackson Series, usually The first few books of a series are all about world-building and this book delivers more than I expected from it when I started reading it. So I will give it a score of 81 out of 100, making it a ‘worth read’ in fantasy fiction.
